San D is a limited edition artistic carpet designed by Henny van Nistelrooy's (Studio HVN)'s to Milan's luxury carpet brand Illulian. The concept of San D came from 「the three-dimensional」 notion in the Chinese language. In which 「San」 means 3(three), to the idea of the three-layered carpets which seems to be overlapping. While 「D」 represents dimensionality, by the means of color gradient on the surface to emphasize the stereoscopic effect of 'the threedimensional concept. When 「D」 is read as 「Di」, the expression also means 「floor」 and 「carpet」 in the Chinese Language.
The inspiration for the carpet design came from the overlay composition of interior decoration. The spark of the design came from the thought of how to display a three-dimensional shape upon a two-dimensional frame. The artwork combined multiple layers of carpets and uses a slight color gradient change to achieve a three-dimensional effect. The color tone changes from light to dark and forms images blend into the carpet concepts.
With the framework of the design being clear and concise, subtle details add on to the peculiar design as shown from its side hem. In usual cases, the design of the side hem describes as a way of closing the side edge effect for the carpet. However, in Henny van Nistelrooy's (Studio HVN)'s design, the side hem was used at the inner contour of the carpet, repetitively shown upon the knotting wool, bearing out the scene of the crossing lamination of the carpet.
